The Melbourne Hotel is an old heritage pub that's been renovated to a high luxury standard without losing it's old fashioned charm. We stayed one night in December and booked a Balcony Room which is at the front of the building so your room opens out onto the verandah overlooking Milligan St. Its location on a busy intersection means you get a bit of traffic noise, and a fire alarm at a building across the road was annoying, but you have to expect that from a hotel in a modern busy CBD. Our room had all modern furnishings and a really comfy huge bed, great air con, complimentary bottled water, big fluffy towels, slippers and bathrobes. We ordered room service breakfast of ham and cheese toasties, which we ate on the sunlight-filled balcony outside our room while watching the city wake up. Instead of instant coffee sachets you are supplied with drip filter coffee bags, which were confusing to use and didn't taste that great to be honest. There is a Cantonese and a Japanese restaurant on site, as well as a roof-top bar which unfortunately was closed to us for a private function the night we were there. There is limited on-site parking behind the hotel available at an added cost, and would recommend checking in early to secure one of these if you want your car close. There are other food and drink options within walking distance and a convenience store directly across the road.

We arrived in the morning at 6am+. Our customer visits would start at 10.30am so we asked for early check-in. We had reserved 2 rooms. Guess what, a room was ready but we would have to pay AUD 289 and considered a full day stay. It was too expensive to pay for a 2hrs use so we rejected the offer. We decided to rest at the small lobby and when we wanted to leave our luggage at 9am+, another front desk lady told us the room would be available at AUD 100 now. I would have paid AUD 100 for early check in t 6am+ i they have offered to us earlier.

Strangely soulless.

The Melbourne is a strangely soulless place. The receptionists don't greet you. There is no "how was your flight from London?" We arrived on a Sunday and every restaurant was closed, other than a noodle place, and the rooftop bar was closed. Our room was a good size, and very clean, but we could not work out how to switch off all the lights without removing the key from the electricity slot, so no air conditioning during the night. Either that, or sleep all night long with the light on. We went for a drink to the bar on Monday evening, which was a bogan fest, all at high volume in a bar with serious acoustic problems, and a heavily tattooed barmaid with an attitude problem.

Great hotel in a great location

We stayed here for 3 nights in a Verandah room and enjoyed every minute. The room was very spacious and being able to sit out on the balcony was a real plus. The staff were friendly and helpful. The location was just far enough out of the centre city to avoid much of the noise but still close enough to walk into town. If we are lucky enough to visit Perth again we will definitely stay here.

It’s just ok. The room was ok and quiet. Food is really average. Ate breakfast only once because it was so bland. The whole ‘dining area’ is just not nice, clinical atmosphere, hard chairs. It just felt like an afterthought area. We also ordered room service as the rooftop bar closed at 9pm (on a Friday night!) we had just landed into the city. Food again just tasteless. The main faux pas for us was the reception staff. When we arrived there was no welcome or hello. I think the gentleman muttered 3 words - our room number and could he have a credit card. I had to return to ask for the Wi-Fi code, where breakfast was, you know, just basic info you’re generally explained upon arrival. Wi fi was useless. We asked for the ‘VIP Wi-Fi’ passcode at reception, again no apology, in fact this gentleman didn’t speak one word to us, he just passed us a post it note. Staff at reception are robotic, the most impersonal staff we’ve come across in 5 months of travelling. They just stare at their computers and we felt like we were inconveniencing them by asking a question. I think more front of house training needs to happen. Better hotels to stay.
